Module 8: Professional Development

Certification

As discussed in one of our previous modules, certification is one way to demonstrate that an individual possesses a high level of knowledge in a particular nursing specialty, and connotes a certain quality standard of practice.  Some common certifications for nurse educators include the Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) for academic faculty through the National League for Nursing, the Nursing Professional Development (RN-BC) through the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) through the National Certification Board for Diabetic Educators, and certified lactation consultants through the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE).

Some states require certification or continuing education credits for relicensure and practice. There is a wide variation, and it pays to know the standards in your state. What other national nurse educator certifications can you think of?
