Module 8: Professional Development
Continuing Education
Continuing education can take various forms. Returning to school for coursework, a higher degree or an academic certificate is one form. Job-based education that helps a nurse extend his or her KSAs, job or role performance (such as a charge nurse workshop or a conflict resolution course) are another. Attendance at grand rounds and journal clubs or attendance in local, regional, state, national, or international conferences also counts as continuing education. These forms may or may not include the opportunity to receive continuing nurse education credits (CNE). Most nursing specialties and several nursing education bodies (ANCC, AACN, NLN, NETNEP, PNEG, INACSL, etc.) hold annual conferences or conventions which provide great networking, resources, and opportunities to learn.
