Modifiable Lifestyle Risk Factors: Impact of Multiple Risk Factors

The impact of risk factors is cumulative; each factor adds to the long-term risk of cardiovascular and noncardiovascular mortality and life expectancy. Findings from very large population-based, prospective studies show that individuals with favorable levels of blood pressure and cholesterol who do not smoke have much longer life spans. If there is an increase in the proportion of the population at lifetime low risk, this could contribute significantly to ending the coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease epidemics, reducing all-cause mortality, increasing life expectancy and improving the health status of the U.S .
