Module 2: Poster Presentation
Podium Presentation
The success of disseminating evidence-based practice recommendations is ultimately measured by the degree to which it influences or is used to change practice. Podium presentations at health-related conferences provide a forum for the rapid dissemination of project findings directly to health professionals who can apply the results in their setting.
Guidelines for UMSON DNP Project Podium Presentations
- Use one of the UMSON templates to develop your slides
- Be sure to acknowledge your project faculty advisor’s contribution under acknowledgements on the last slide
- Have the slides reviewed and approved by your clinical site representative and course faculty member before presenting it
- Do not use any identifiers of the organization in which your project was implemented on the slides unless you have written permission from the organization to include the names of other contributors to the project
- Check with your clinical site representative to find out if the organization requires any other review process and approval before presenting the findings, and follow the required processes.
Tips for Giving an Effective Podium Presentation
Preparation: An effective podium presentation begins with the process of creating an outline. It may be helpful to have the content carefully reviewed by your assigned faculty member or clinical site representative for organization, structure and content prior to the presentation.
First & Last Impression: Introductory statements are important because they establish the subject and the speaker's rapport with the audience. An optimal start also helps to build the presenter's confidence, so rehearsal is essential. Concluding remarks are equally important because they create a lasting impression and a memorable experience. The conclusion should include a summary of the key points.
Content: The concepts. and important points should be clearly defined with care taken not to overwhelm the audience with irrelevant details. The presentation should be planned according to the audience's background, interests and skills.
Style: The style of the presentation should be well-paced and within the allotted time. The speaker should use and strong and varying tone of voice. Eye contact with audience is essential, while avoiding looking at the screen excessively.
