NDNP 811 – DNP Project Development

Module 3: Proposal Presentation Update

Barriers

Barriers to change are common and to be expected. Pushback is a natural consequence to disruptions to established routines and processes. Barriers, typically, will not be resolved unless they are specifically addressed and identified.
The team will need to consider the psychological, physical, and procedural barriers it has to address in order to accomplish its aim. Barriers to improvement come in many forms. Psychological barriers such as fear of change, fear of failure, grief over loss of familiar processes, or fear of loss of control or power can be significant impediments to overcome. Other common barriers include the following:

  • Inexperience with quality improvement, lack of support or buy-in
  • Deficient knowledge or ability, lack of training
  • Inadequate staffing levels and/or resources.
  • Limited information technology systems.
  • Outdated or misguided organizational policies.

Overcome barriers and resistance to change through your leadership:

  • Structure the team
  • Set achievable goals
  • Resolve conflict
  • Show your passion and vision
  • Persuade and focus on opportunity
  • Empower
  • Remain positive and support

Take a 10-minute pause and contemplate 3 specific possible barriers to your DNP project and how you would mitigate or overcome that barrier to achieve your goals – you will be discussing this in your final DNP Manuscript
