NURS 834 - Translating Evidence to Practice
Module 5: Implementing Change and Design for Evaluation
Cost and Charges
The evaluation of economic outcomes can be approached from the healthcare organization, unit, patient, insurer or state or federal perspective. The answer to the question, “what are the costs?”, will differ based on the payor’s perspective of interest. An additional consideration is that cost and charges are two different concepts.
Charges represent how much was billed- not how much it cost to provide the service- or how much the organization or providers were reimbursed. Cost to charge ratios are one way to estimate actual costs of resources for inpatient care.
LOGIC MODEL: OUTPUTS = Direct Products
A way to measure the implementation of the action. We call this output indicators.
As you think about outputs what resources will you need to accomplish the outputs?
Time, money, materials, equipment, technology. How will you determine the cost/benefit of acquiring these resources from the organization?
