Database Models, Data Warehouses and Data Dashboards
Learning Activities
Databases are more than just the components within a computer or computer system. These models are how the information is stored, in what form, what level, and in what type of files.

Definitions:
- Database: “A collection of related data” (Alexander et al., 2014)
- Database Management System (DBMS): software that helps organize data in a way that allows fast and easy access to the data
- Data Dashboard: an interface that allows users to view information from a variety of data sources simultaneously. For instance, a data dashboard for a nurse manager might allow him/her to simultaneously view on the same screen individual nurses assigned to the unit, the bidding process for the next month’s schedule, the daily costs of supplies on her unit, patient acuity, and vacant beds. This would allow the nurse manager to make better decisions about her units needs and care provision.
- Data Warehouse: virtual storage areas for large databases. These warehouses are designed in such a way as to allow a user to query the warehouse in a similar way that one would query an individual database.
