Technology to Support Interprofessional Communication and Collaboration
Overview
The introduction of computer technology has changed the way we interact with our environment and communicate with others. A phone is no longer just used to make calls but we have the ability to text, email, take photos, listen to music and variety of other activities from one device. Technology is an essential tool for all contemporary healthcare settings. The use of technology in healthcare has changed the role of nurses and how we communicate with other professionals. Although technologies are integrated into a variety of nursing and patient care activities, we are far from discovering all the possibilities. To understand possibilities, we need to know the basics of how computers and telecommunication works. The purpose of this module is to introduce basic computer hardware, software, and telecommunication components and devices that support interprofessional communication and collaboration in the healthcare setting.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this module, the learner will be able to:
- Identify basic computer software and hardware to support interprofessional communication and collaboration in the healthcare setting.
- Recognize the need for networking and telecommunication protocols to foster effective communication.
- Discuss various database models and associated terms such as data warehouse and data dashboards, data mining and knowledge discovery.
- Explore the use of healthcare communication technology to support interprofessional communication and collaboration.
