Levels of Measurement

Levels of Measurement or scales of measurement classified by Stevens (1946) employ rules to assign numbers to objects to represent the kind and/or amount of a specified attribute possessed by them in a hierarchical manner. From lower to higher Levels of Measurement , the scales of measurement are nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio. Variables can be measured at different Levels of Measurement of precision, the higher the level of measurement, the higher the level of precision. One must determine the level at which each study variable is measured in order to determine the appropriate statistic to employ in analyzing data.
