NRSG 790 - Methods for Research and Evidence-Based Practice

Module 3: Research Methods

Learning Activities

Appraising the quality of the evidence obtained from a study requires careful analysis of the sampling plan. Ideally the researchers will describe the sampling technique, eligibility criteria, sample size, accessible population, and characteristics of the sample.

One of your activities when appraising research is to determine the generalizability of the findings from the researchers sample to the target population. Flawed sampling or insufficient detail in the published study impacts your ability to determine whether findings can be applied to your clinical practice.

  1. Practice critiquing sampling designs by reading Carroll, K.M. et al (2014). Computer-assisted delivery of cognitive behavioral therapy: Efficacy and durability of CBT4CBT among cocaine dependent individuals maintained on methadone. American Journal of Psychiatry 171:4, 436-444.

Consider the following questions about the selected community-based study.
    • Is the target population and eligibility criteria identified?
    • Are sampling selection and recruitment procedures explained?
    • Are key characteristics of the sample described?
    • What type of sampling technique was used? Would an alternative have been feasible?
    • What are possible sampling biases?
    • Does the sampling procedure support or threaten external validity? If threatened, to whom can the study findings be generalized?
