NRSG 790 - Methods for Research and Evidence-Based Practice

Module 2: Research Overview and Design

Learning Activities

1. Review and critique the following research abstract. Answers will be posted in the weekly course announcement

  • Objective: To summarize the changes of blood pressure before and after suctioning in patients with hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage and to study the effect of different depths of aspiration on blood pressure in these patients.
  • Methods: A total of 51 patients with hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage were included in this study. On the day after surgery, changes in blood pressure were randomly monitored before and after 6 endotracheal suctioning (deep and shallow endotracheal suctioning 3 times respectively); the changing status of blood pressure was summarized to analyze the effect of deep and shallow endotracheal suctioning on blood pressure of these patients.
  • Results: The blood pressure of the patients was significantly increased then recovered gradually to the level before endotracheal suctioning. The blood pressure of the patients before and after the deep and shallow aspiration was similar. The blood pressure restored in 5 min after the deep endotracheal suctioning, and in 3 min after the shallow endotracheal suctioning. Within 3 min after the endotracheal suctioning 9 the blood pressure of deep suctioning patients increased more specific than the patients with shallow suctioning (P<0.05).
  • Conclusion: For patients with hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage after airway management, suction will increase its blood pressure irritation and deep suction had a greater effect. On the basis of ensuring the effect of suction, shallow endotracheal suctioning would be a better and safer choice.

2. Critique Questions:

  • What is the hypothesis of the research? Directional or Non-Directional?
  • What is the design of the research? Quantitative or Qualitative? Experimental or Observational?
  • What is the time-nature of the research?
  • What is the theoretical basis (framework) for the research?

3. Complete the PICOT Worksheet located under the Assignments Tab

  • Use your learning and content from Module 1 and your clinical experience as resources to identify a practice issue/topic
  • Present the issue and a PICOT statement on the worksheet and submit for faculty review
