NRSG 790 - Methods for Research and Evidence-Based Practice

Module 1: Introduction to Evidence-Based Practice

Overview of Evidence

What is evidence? Evidence is facts believed to be true.

  • External Evidence – generated through scientific research in the form of experimental or observational studies such as Randomized Control Trials or Cohort Studies to generate new knowledge
  • Internal Evidence – generated through practice initiatives (quality improvement) in facilities such as hospitals. This evidence is generated from patients to improve clinical care

What Is the purpose of evidence? Using evidence is practice results in the highest quality of care and best patient outcomes. Using evidence:

  • reduces health care costs
  • reduces variation in care
  • empowers providers

Are we ready to engage in EBP healthcare

  • 50% of all nurses are not familiar with EBP
  • 50% of all nurses do not believe their peers practice EBP
  • 25% of all nurses have never learned how to access scientific evidence through a bibliographic database
  • Evidence takes 17 years to move from the bench (science, lab) to the bedside, resulting in a significant research-to-practice gap

Initiatives to close the Research-to-Practice gap
