Module 2: Exposure Assessment and Control

Overview

The content of this module is guided by the APHA and ANA principles and strategies you learned in the prior module that relate to the nature of environmental exposures. Sources and pathways of exposure, populations at risk for exposure, and strategies for reduction or elimination of exposure are identified and explained. Resources and tools are explored and utilized to conduct an exposure assessment of one’s own home, school, workplace, and/or community environments.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this module, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe the transport and fate of environmental contaminants
  • Identify the main exposure sources and the biologic exposure routes (e.g. inhalation, ingestion, dermal, placental/breast milk) of identified hazards
  • Explain the importance in the consideration of multi-environment, multi-chemical, and persistent pollutant exposures
  • Locate and utilize credible assessment tools and resources to assist in identification of potential hazards and exposure risks in homes, workplaces, schools, and communities
  • Discuss strategies and interventions aimed at elimination or reduction of exposures and within the context of an appropriate framework (e.g. Industrial Hygiene Hierarchy of Controls in the workplace)
