Module 5: Collaborative Teaching Strategies

Active Learning

Active learning is defined as project-based learning in which active student participation in the learning process is promoted. In active learning, the teacher acts as a facilitator of the student learning experience rather than a one-way provider of information.

Active teaching-learning strategies require content and objectives that guide the students learning. As a part of the active learning environment, the students discover, process, and apply what they have learned while actively engaging in activities to enhance their knowledge of the subject. The tasks that students perform require a higher level of thinking which includes objectives at the analysis, synthesis, and evaluation levels.

Why use active learning? Active learning is one of the principles of good practice. It is using activity-based experiences to engage the learner in the learning process.
