NURS 787 - Theotretical Foundations of Teaching and Learning
Module 7: Roles and Environments
Learning Environments and Settings
As we have discussed, nurse educators work in many settings and teach in various formats. The Institute for Educators offers electives focused on three of these major formats; teaching in the academic setting, with a focus on classroom teaching, teaching in the online environment, and finally, teaching in the clinical setting. All three of these settings have unique challenges and require special attributes from the educator.
Other learning environments and formats include simulation (high, low, or no-tech), clinical or skills laboratories, and virtual environments.
Regardless of setting and/or format, basic teaching practices are critical. Good teaching, as we discussed in Module 1, is good teaching. The importance of understanding the learner, his/her needs, determining gaps, constructing objectives, and choosing meaningful and appropriate teaching and evaluation strategies are the basis of sound teaching practice. The table below gives some basic comparisons of what educators can expect in various settings. What would you add in the Benefits column, both for educator and learner?
