NURS 787 - Theoretical Foundations of Teaching and Learning

Module 1: Introduction to Teaching and Learning

The Teaching Learning Process

The teaching learning process, or the education process, has been defined as a systematic, sequential, planned course of action on the part of both the teacher and learner to achieve the outcomes of teaching and learning.

There are several steps involved in this process. Let’s look more closely at these steps. This figure, from our Bastable text, shows a clear comparison between the nursing process, which we all know as assessment, problem identification (or diagnosis), planning, implementation, and evaluation (ADPIE), and the education, or teaching learning process.  This concept helps us connect a process that we know and use each day, to a new skill set of teaching.  We can see that the steps are the same, but instead of patients, families, or consumers, educators work with learners in many different settings.

Reflection Activity:

Here is a current list of the "best of TED" talks on teaching and/or learning which you may find inspiring, compelling, or thought provoking for various reasons. You will see that there are as many different perspectives on teaching and learning as there are teachers and students.

Reflect on what you think is important about the steps in the teaching and learning process.
