Nurs 659 - Organizational/Professional Dimensions

Module 11: Managing Innovation and Change

Overview

Questions for thought:

(1) Have there ever been instances where staff perceived change differently than you did?

(2) How well do we and our colleagues understand change?

(3) Is there a 'best practices' for change?

(4) What is my role as leader in effecting change?

"Change is the only constant in the current environment.....and, the ability to effectively manage change, to empower others, and to influence the political process are three reciprocal elements of the advanced practice nursing competency of leadership"

Hamric, et. al., (2014)

As leaders for today and tomorrow, your role extends well beyond the traditional clinical leadership.  Hamric et. al., (2014) identifies advanced practice leadership as occurring in four primary domains: in clinical practice environments, in the nursing profession, at the systems level, and in health care policymaking arenas.  It is important for the practitioner to recognize the various roles, develop requisite skill for carrying out these roles, and acquire and test strategies for meeting the challenges that lie ahead.

In this module, the emphasis is on leadership and three major sections are discussed: (1) the challenge of innovation and change, (2) understanding and managing change, and (3) meeting the challenge of change - the personal and career dimensions of development. The discussion is organized in this manner to provide a brief overview  of  some of the forces behind change, to delve into the theoretical and practical approaches to understanding and managing the dynamics of change, and, finally, to address the personal and career dimensions necessary for meeting the challenges of change.

The material in this module is designed to supplement material in the required text.  Additional explanation and content is provided to enhance your appreciation of leadership and change.
