Nurs 810 - Evidence-Based Policy Development

Module 2: Evidence-Based Policy: Definition and Barriers to Use

Overview

Although there are advantages to taking an evidence-based approach to policy decision-making, there are barriers that must be recognized. In this online module learners will synthesize literature to construct definitions of evidence-based policy. Learners will identify the advantages of an evidence-based approach to policy development. Barriers to the adoption of evidence-based policy will be analyzed. As leaders in their respective settings, learners will apply content by identifying ways in which they can equip and prepare nurses at various levels of education to influence the development of evidence-based policy at their own institutions and beyond.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this module, the learner will be able to:

  • Define and describe evidence-based policy
  • Review the legislative process
  • Begin to identify the role of evidence-based policy in supporting policy or legislative changes.
  • Identify three to five articles related to a policy issue.
  • Rank the level of evidence of articles.

The module objectives support the following course objectives:

Critically analyze the role of research, evidence-based practice, and evaluation in the development of evidence based policy at the institutional, professional, state, federal, and international levels
