There are many definitions of reflection. What they have in common is that reflection is an active and conscious process of exploring experiences to discover new meaning. There are two types of reflection: reflection-in-action and reflection-on-action. Reflection-in-action is thinking on your feet while reflection-on-action is thinking about past events.

What are the theories and models related to reflection?

There are several theoretical models that are related to reflection. These include the Reflective Cycle, the Cycle of Experiential Learning, the Model of Structured Reflection, the Reflective Practitioner and Gibbs Reflective Cycle.

What are the types of reflection?

John Ward describes and gives examples of four types of reflection:

  • Routine: definitive sentences
  • Technical: reflection is used to solve problems
  • Dialogic: reflection is a process
  • Critical: questions fundamental assumptions.
How is reflection used in education?

Reflection can be writing in journals.

Reflection can be a professional portfolio. An example is found at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Can reflections be web-based?

Reflective writing online are called Web logs or blogs. Blogs allow publishing of content to the web.
