Module 3: Teacher Intensive Strategies

Panel of Experts

Having an expert or experts come to a lecture to provide first hand knowledge and/or experience on a topic can be a great way to make a lecture more interactive. The learner will be able to see the application of the material in real life situations. At first glance, it may seem that inviting one or more “experts” to present in a lecture is not very “teacher intensive”, however this is not the case. The teacher must:

• identify the expert(s) and ensure that they are good presenters.
• instruct them on the material to be presented and the characteristics of the learners.
• coordinate travel, parking, technology, and honoraria if appropriate.
• facilitate the presentation and discussion by keeping the expert on topic and within time limits.
