  2. Conduct a SWOT Analysis based upon the following scenario:
Starbucks Coffee Company is the leading retailer, roaster and brand of specialty coffee in the world. The company was established in 1971 as a small coffee shop in Seattle and has expanded into almost 18,000 businesses around the globe. The company went public in the early 1990’s and has a good reputation with customers and employees. It became the first company in history with employee stock options that included part-time employees.

The company has over-expanded in the past few years and is now facing the decision to close less profitable locations and suffer losses for the first time or try a new strategy to tap in to the over 70 demographic. This population has historically avoided Starbucks, going instead to McDonald’s or convenience stores for coffee. Market analysis has shown that a gain in sales from this population could boost profits enough to keep the stores open in all locations. Past promotions have shown that given free coupons, this age group will patronize Starbucks. However, without free coupons, only about 10% of sales are from this group.

Employees have a vested interest in the Starbucks product and the success of the company. Today they must decide whether to begin a promotion that offers 99 cent coffee for seniors. There are risks to this promotion. For example, this price lowers the profit margin to only 25 cents over costs. This may not be profitable unless seniors splurge on additional products such as pastries, mugs, or coffee beans. In addition, the Starbucks image is known for being young, hip, an urban hangout with plenty of seating and wi-fi. How will the image change if it turns into a place for an older crowd? How will employees handle non-seniors asking for such a good discount?
