Module 11: Environmental Health and Emergency Preparedness
Case Study
As we prepare to leave the residents of Curtis Bay, we take one last look. Through hard work and with the help of key community stakeholders, Destiny and her friends were able to successfully stop the construction of a new incinerator (read about her amazing story). That is great news, but challenges remain. We learned that Curtis Bay is highly industrialized, leading to large amounts of pollution in the community, exacerbating asthma and causing other health problems. This module introduces another issue related to the presence of factories and industry – an environmental emergency. On September 18, 2017, a chemical leak occurred at the Solvay Inc, plant in Curtis Bay. Please watch the news report video and skim the article.
