Nurs 467 - Public Health Nursing

Module 1: Foundational Concepts - Introduction

Scope and Standards of Practice

Public health nursing is supported by many organizations. The Council of Public Health Nursing Organizations.Nursing Organizations (QCC) aims to give a voice to PHNs by setting priorities for policy and advocacy, education, practice and research. Current composition of the CPHNO includes the Association of Public Health Nurses (APHN), the Public Health Nursing section of APHA, the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE) and the Association of Community Health Nurse Educators (ACHNE).

In 2013, the American Nurses Association (ANA) published the second edition of Public Health Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, which was originally developed in conjunction with the QCC. These standards cover many of the topics that you will learn about this semester, including assessment, care coordination, health teaching, ethics, leadership, and environmental health. As we get to some of these topics throughout the semester, we will discuss the standards as applicable.
