Nurs460 – Health Informatics for Registered Nurses

Module 7: Electronic Health Record Standards and Interoperability

Overview

The need for data and information access from a variety of sources in order to coordinate care is a national priority. Healthcare organizations struggle with collecting meaningful data and how to exchange this information to the appropriate entities. This module will explore the benefits and challenges associated with electronic health record integration and interoperability. We will discuss efforts related to standardization, what it means to be “interoperable”, Health Information Exchange networks, and the implications for nursing practice.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this module, the learner will be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast various terminologies, languages and classifications used to support patient care to include challenges for implementing standards.
  2. Discuss the benefits and challenges related to EHR integration and interoperability at a local, regional, and national level along with developing a Health Information Exchange (HIE).
  3. Identify essential information and standards that must be available in a common database to support patient care.
  4. Recognize the implications for nursing practice related to EHR standards, integration and interoperability
