NRSG 794 - Introduction to the Nursing Faculty Role

Module 5: Approvals and Accreditation

Overview

Nursing education encompasses much more than the faculty and students involved in the teaching-learning process. There are many layers of laws, policies, guidelines, approvals and certifications. In this module, we will start with exploring the United States Department of Education, Institutional Accreditation, licensure and governance of nursing practice, and actual accreditation of nursing programs. There are multiple points in this complex array where nursing faculty are indirectly or very directly involved in a range of activities ranging from licensure which assures minimally competent practice, regulation of nursing practice, to approval and accreditation of nursing programs. As you read this module, be thinking of the actual and potential implications of what you are reading for nursing faculty members.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this module, the learner will:

  • discuss the multiple layers of approvals and accreditation of nursing and nursing education programs; and
  • relate actual and potential implications for nursing faculty in the process of approvals and accreditation of nursing and nursing education programs.
