Module 3: Epidemiology
Overview
The purpose of this module is to provide an introduction to epidemiology and its importance in investigating disease patterns, in determining risk factors for disease, and in providing a sound basis for decision-making in clinical care and public health.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this module, the learner will be able to:
- Define epidemiology
- Discuss the aims of epidemiology
- Recognize key figures and events in the history of epidemiology
- Interpret measures of morbidity and mortality in descriptive studies
- Distinguish types of analytical studies: cross-sectional, case-control, cohort
- Contrast experimental studies: clinical trials, community trials
- Assess the quality of scientific evidence
- Explain how priorities are set in public health
- Provide an overview of priority setting using epidemiological data
