NDNP 813 - DNP Project Evaluation and Dissemination

Module 1: Introduction

Poster Planning

What excitement! Your abstract was accepted for presentation at a conference. What now? Think of your poster as a conversation starter. It is not meant to be a comprehensive report. A poster is a tool to share your work.

First Step

Your first step is to review the conference guidelines for your presentation. What are the dates for submission and presentation of your final poster? What are the size parameters for your poster? Is there any information that you are required to put on your poster, such as specific sections, funding information or conference logo?

You will be developing a poster in accordance with the requirements for NDNP 813 (see grading rubric), however, your conference may have different requirements that must be met. Work closely with your Project Faculty and other authors to ensure that both the conference and school requirements are met.

Know your Audience

Identifying your audience and message will help you decide what information to include on your poster. Who will be viewing your poster? How likely is it that your audience will be knowledgeable about your topic? As hard as this is to hear, some people will not read your entire poster. Your audience may be short on time, disconnected to your topic, or not hooked by your poster. To address this, hook the viewers with a capturing title. Ensure that the colors, images, and text have visual grammar. Your audience should know what you did, what you found, and why it's important by scanning the title, results, graphics and conclusions of your poster.

Know your Story

A scholarly poster is more than a presentation of information and data; it’s a story. The components should work together to create one cohesive and engaging story that leads viewers to your main conclusion. Consider writing a short narrative of the story you are trying to tell first. Then break the story down into a content outline, using the required poster headings. Be concise – include only the essential details to tell the story

Review Module for best design practices for poster success. Consider this sample from a prior UMSON DNP student. This serves only as a visual illustration – a guide. You may have different images or graphs to include. Your goals may be stated differently or QR codes may not be your preference. Every student has their own story tell – tell yours in your authentic voice!
