Nurs 736 - Technology Solutions for Knowledge Generation in Healthcare
Module 4: Managing Organizational Information
Overview
A major goal of nursing informatics is to improve the health of individuals, families, communities, and populations by optimizing information management and communication. These activities include the design and use of informatics solutions and technology to support all areas of nursing including: direct care, administrative systems, and support of nursing research. Healthcare entities run complex operations that are increasingly dependent on computers and electronically stored data. Networks, software, and data may become unavailable for various reasons in healthcare organizations. It is important for them and for other stakeholders to plan for such downtime and continue operations with as little interruption as possible. This module describes the role that administrative information systems provide in support of nursing and patient care. It also discusses the various strategies for system downtime management and disaster recovery for health information systems.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this module, the learner will be able to:
- Compare the major components of a healthcare information system: Clinical Information Systems (CIS) and Administrative Information Systems.
- Evaluate how Administrative Information Systems support the process of patient care by managing the nonclinical, patient related information.
- Formulate an argument for how Administrative Information Systems contribute substantially to safety, quality, and efficiency research.
- Analyze methods to prepare for system downtime and disaster recovery.
- Explain downtime risk assessment.
- Summarize the clinician’s role in system downtime planning.
- Summarize information technology’s role in system downtime planning.
