Module 2: Foundational Concepts: Social Determinants, Social Justice and Ethics
Overview
The factors that influence people’s health are wide-ranging and complex. This module first focuses on the social determinants of health. These are the social, economic and physical conditions in which we live, work, and learn that play an important role in human health. Differences in these conditions can lead to health disparities, or differences in health outcomes. When the disparities occur differentially for groups of people, social injustice exists.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this module, the learner will be able to:
- Define key terminology
- Identify 3 social determinants of health
- Analyze the impact of determinants on health outcomes
- Compare and contrast market justice and social justice
- Describe the ethical role of public health nurses
