View YouTube video on Information Literacy in a Nutshell at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ronp6Iue9w
Definitions:
- Computer Literacy: “Familiarity with the use of computers, including software tools such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation graphics and e-mail.” (Hebda & Czar, 2013)
- Information Literacy: “The degree to which individuals can obtain, process, and understand the basic health information and services they need to make appropriate health decisions.” (Alexander et. al, 2014)
Application Meditation
Although the video focused on Information Literacy for Students in Higher Education see if you can apply these principles to Nursing Practice and the use of the Electronic Health Record (EHR). We will be discussing many of these topics throughout the curriculum.
- What data and information is available in the EHR for clinical practice?
- What skills are needed to navigate the EHR in the clinical setting?
- What is the need, availability, sources, costs and benefits of using the EHR in the conduct of patient care?
- How is information in the EHR evaluated for accuracy and quality?
- Is access and use of the EHR effective and efficient?
- Are reports and the ability to abstract needed information available to the clinician?
- How can information and knowledge available in the EHR be evaluated and incorporated into nursing practice?
- How can the nurse use or apply information from the EHR effectively to accomplish a specific purpose?
- What are the ethics to consider when using EHR related to privacy, confidentiality and security?
