NURS 450 - RN to BSN Transition: Implications for Practice, Policy and the Profession
Module 11: Interprofessional Teams
IPEC Competencies
The Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) competencies are integrate into curricula for all health professional programs. Why is this important? “Collaborate practice is vital to assure safe, patient centered and high quality care” (Interprofessional Education Collaborative, 2016, p. 4). Educators use this document to assure graduates possess the core competences upon graduation. Developing the IPEC document is an excellent example of effective teamwork. Why? “The collaborative, representing dentistry, nursing, medicine, osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, and public health, convened an expert panel of representatives from each of the six IPEC sponsor professions to create core competencies for interprofessional collaborative practice, to guide curriculum development across health professions schools” (Interprofessional Education Collaborative, 2016, p. 1).
Review the IPEC document, read the operational definitions or key terms (p. 8) and each of the four competency domains, and associated sub-competencies (pages 8- 14). Examine the illustration on page 9 to see a visual depiction of how the four domains of interprofessional collaborative practice (values/ethics, roles/responsibilities, interprofessional communication, teams and teamwork), support a patient centered and population health focus. Complete this section by watching all four video’s then reflect on how you will improve your interprofessional collaborative practice through the integration of the IPEC sub competencies. Please see the required reading section for the links to the videos.
