NURS 410 - Health Care Delivery Systems & Informatics

Module 12: Professional Practice Standards, Policy, and Liability

Position Statement

We know that information management and literacy are core competencies of a registered nurse. No matter the setting, nurses will “use” multiple technologies in the provisions of care and service coordination (e.g., electronic health records, computerized physician/provider order entry, clinical decision support, 3-D printing, etc.). And we know that nurses are integral in leading healthcare reform, using information technologies, because technology allows for:

  • Improved access to health information, including online access, making it easier for patients to have continuity of care across providers;
  • Flexible access to health care services to fit a patient’s schedule, need and location (e.g., personalized website for a preadmission patient education) and,
  • Better accountability and improved health outcomes for providers and hospitals, via effectiveness tracking like rating systems.

The ANA positions statement, Inclusion of Recognized Terminologies within EHRs and other Health Information Technology Solutions (2015b) is relevant to this course and this module since it illustrates how policy and professional standards direct both nursing education and nursing practice. Read through the position statement (http://www.nursingworld.org/MainMenuCategories/Policy-Advocacy/Positions-and-Resolutions/ANAPositionStatements/Position-Statements-Alphabetically/Inclusion-of-Recognized-Terminologies-within-EHRs.html) and consider how much you have learned. Reflect back on a recent clinical experience and list how technology helped you develop and coordinate and administer care and services.
