Module 1: Overview of Healthcare Delivery System
Strengths and Weaknesses
We have all read articles discussing how the U. S. health care system stacks up to other health care programs in developed countries. Yet if asked, how would you describe the strengths and the weakness of the U. S. health care delivery system, how would you respond? What data would we use to support your position? Let’s use some data to help us begin this discussion. Access the Kaiser Family Foundation web site (http://kff.org/). In the search box type in infant mortality and hit enter. In the center of the page, click on state and global data. In that page, click on infant mortality rate, global indicator. What is the world overall rate? What is the rate for the US? Which country has the “best” rate? What questions would you ask to learn about a countries healthcare delivery system that might help you understand why the overall infant mortality rate is so low?
Review the PowerPoint slides to quickly learn more about our healthcare systems components, the influences that impact our system, and how we might describe the aspects of our system that are viewed as strengths and weaknesses.
Fixing America’s health care system means more than just guaranteeing that everyone has coverage. To address the rising costs of health care, we must improve the way that health care is delivered, including coordinating care better and improving the safety of care (Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, 2013). One way to focus on improving the system, as a whole, to frame adjustments and solutions using the Triple Aim approach. What is the triple Aim approach?
