NRSG 794 - Introduction to the Nursing Faculty Role

Module 3: The Nursing Faculty Role

Overview

Many institutions of higher learning consider the faculty role as being divided into three major areas: Teaching, Research/Scholarship, and Service. The public often views the faculty member spending equal amounts of time effort in these areas. In actuality, the amount of teaching and activities related to teaching may be the majority effort of a faculty member or a minority effort depending upon the type of faculty role and the type of program and institution.

In this module, consideration moves beyond the conceptualization above to introduce the Boyer model, which has been widely embraced in the nursing profession. You will become familiar with both of these approaches and be able to consider which is the most comfortable for you and what types of faculty activities can be considered in each of the four areas of the model.

Finally, the process of nursing faculty evaluation is discussed. This section will allow you to consider how this process contributes to the nursing faculty member’s professional growth and development. This is important, as a goal for most faculty members is to advance in rank and move through application for promotion.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this module, the learner will:

give examples of nursing faculty activities in each of the four areas of Boyer’s model;
describe various types of faculty evaluation; and
identify aspects of the promotion process for nursing faculty.
