Module 7: Searching for and Retrieving Evidence
STEPS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SEARCH STRATEGY
The best way to begin a search is by using concepts that are guided by a well-built question. The essential steps in the development of a research strategy are:
- Formulate a well-built clinical question (PICOT Question) and generate keywords
- Establish inclusion and exclusion criteria
- Use controlled vocabulary headings
- Expand search using explode option
- Focus search with available tools to topic of interest
- Combine the searches generated
- Limit the final group of studies to limits appropriate for the question (i.e. year, age, type of study).
- Organize results
