Module 11: Infectious Diseases

Overview

Despite tremendous advances in infectious disease prevention efforts, vaccinations, antibiotics and other treatments that have resulted in increased longevity, millions of Americans still contract infectious diseases each year. Worldwide, infectious diseases are the leading cause of death of people under the age of 60. We remain in the midst of the evolving COVID-19 pandemic compounded by the new strain of flu. All of us are learning how to address these problems and many have been on the frontlines treating patients and trying to control the spread of the disease. (Information on COVID-19 will be addressed in Module 13 Critical Issues in Population Health).

The purpose of this module is to provide an overview of infectious disease transmission and interventions to control the chain of infection. It emphasizes infectious disease prevalence and prevention strategies and population-based initiatives on the national and state level designed to reduce the burden of infectious diseases in general and HIV/AIDS specifically.
