NDNP 870 - Diagnosis and Management 1: Differential Diagnosis of Mental Disorders Across the Lifespan

Module 9: Personality Disorders, Oppositional and Conduct Disorders

Overview

This module will review the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM-5) criteria for the classification of personality, oppositional, and conduct disorders, including epidemiology and natural course of illnesses across the lifespan. These disorders usually co-exist with other psychiatric disorders and may challenge provider-patient relationships. It is important to recognize these disorders that usually become evident over time so PMHNPs can collaborate with these individuals for the most optimal treatment for their co-morbid conditions.

Objectives

By the end of the session, the PMHNP DNP student will be able to:

  • Identify genetic & psychosocial factors that may predispose persons to personality disorders
  • Discuss DSM-5 criteria, onset, course and treatments for personality disorders
  • Develop preliminary and differential diagnoses based on adult and child case analyses
