Module 5: Substance Use Disorders

Overview

This module will review the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM-5 TR) criteria for the classifications of substance use disorders, including epidemiology and natural course of illness. Substance use disorders can coexist with other primary psychiatric disorders; therefore it is critical to identify them. Multiple treatment modalities exist including harm reduction, psychosocial therapy, pharmacology, support systems, and treatment facilities.

Objectives

By the end of the session, the PMHNP DNP student will be able to:

  • Identify genetic & psychosocial factors that may predispose persons to substance use disorder
  • Identify DSM-5 criteria, onset, course and treatments for substance use disorders
  • Develop preliminary and differential diagnoses based on adult and child case analyses.
