NDNP 804 - Theory for Evidence-Based Practice
Module 3: Modern and Postmodern Thought
Overview
In nursing science, modern empirical and postmodern philosophies of science currently co-exist. This is due to the vision and philosophical discourse of nursing leaders during the last half of the 20th century. Sometimes this co-existence has been peaceful, and at other times there has been intra-disciplinary tension within nursing as well as inter-disciplinary tension with scholars from other healthcare disciplines where modernist empiricist worldview of positivism predominates. In this online module, we will begin to explore the value of different philosophies of science and their influence on current nursing practice.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this module, the learner will be able to:
- Identify Modern and Postmodern influences in current practice
- Identify these influences in your own practice
- Develop an initial personal philosophy of nursing that includes ontology, epistemology and logic
