Simulation Guidelines for Learners

Welcome to the Debra L. Spunt Clinical Simulation Lab (CSL)!

The objective of this document is to guide your preparation for your simulation clinical experience. Please review the guidelines carefully in order to gain the best value from your time in the CSL and fulfill clinical course requirements.

What is simulation?

Simulation is a teaching strategy and learning experience that takes place in a laboratory setting but very closely reflects that of a realistic clinical setting. Both learner participation and faculty facilitation is critical to making the experience worthwhile!

How do I prepare for simulation?

Review the Blackboard “Simulation Folder”

  • Within this folder, students will find several critical documents to review before you come to the CSL for your simulation learning experience
  • The Blackboard folder may also contain articles to read, directions to review DocuCare charts, or web links to explore.
  • Please open and review all items located in the “Simulation Folder” within your Blackboard course; each course’s “Simulation Folder” may contain different items.

Complete Pre-Simulation Assignment or “Admission Ticket” (as assigned)

  • The purpose of the Pre-Simulation Assignment or “Admission Ticket” is to guide students’ preparation for the specific simulation learning activity planned
  • The assignment usually takes about 30 minutes – 1 hour to complete
  • Bring the completed assignment with you – this is your “admission ticket” into the simulation lab
  • The assignment may be in either electronic or paper format, but must be visible to the simulation faculty facilitating the simulation experience
  • IMPORTANT!
    • Those that do not come prepared with the assignment will be asked to contact their Clinical/Course Coordinator to reschedule their simulation clinical day and/or to arrange for additional independent assignments.
    • Missed simulation days will follow the guidelines set forth by each course’s syllabus and will be further defined by the Clinical/Course Coordinator

What should I bring to simulation?

  • Any equipment necessary to complete a head-to-toe assessment and provide clinical nursing care appropriate to the course/clinical environment (i.e. stethoscope, pen, paper, pen light, watch, etc…)
  • Come dressed in the clinical uniform as defined by the UMSON Student Handbook
  • Completed Pre-Simulation Assignment or “Admission Ticket” (as assigned)
  • Your curiosity and full participation!

What should I expect when I arrive to simulation?

  • Simulation Facilitator:  Each simulation is facilitated by a trained clinical simulation faculty. In addition, most simulations will have a clinical content expert. This may be your specific clinical instructor or another clinical instructor from your course.  The role of the second individual is to co-facilitate and provide content expertise.
  • Confidentiality:  In effort to provide a safe learning environment, we ask that everyone keep 3 things confidential:
    • Content and details of the simulation case
    • Performance of your peers
    • Content of debriefing discussion
  • Fiction Contract:
    • This concept refers to an agreement between facilitator and learner. The facilitator and simulation department commits to making the environment as realistic as possible to help the participant engage in the simulated clinical experience as if it were an actual clinical patient encounter. We ask that you, the student take the activity seriously as you do when caring for your patients in the actual clinical setting.
  • Potential Video Recording:
    • Video recording may occur under three circumstances:
      • Educational/evaluation purposes for simulation faculty
      • Testing purposes with learners
      • Archiving for accreditation review
    • These circumstances will be disclosed to learners prior to the beginning of the simulation; you will never be recorded without your knowledge
    • If you have any questions about recordings, please consult with the CSL Faculty prior to the beginning of the simulation
